The University of BOTSWANA, LESOTHO & SWAZILAND

The opening of the University of Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland (UBBS) on 1 January 1964 was the outcome of an agreement reached in the mid-1962 between the High Commission Territories and the Oblate of Mary Immaculate of Pius XII Catholic University, Roma, Lesotho.

Pius XII College of Roma, which is 35 kilometres from Maseru, was itself the product of a desire for an institution of higher learning for Africans by a Catholic Church hierarchy in southern Africa. It opened its doors to students in 1946, with five students and five priest-lecturers. In 1950, it was taken over by the Catholic Order of the Oblate of Mary Immaculate.

By 1963, there were 180 students, both men and women, and several buildings, including a science block, refectory, administration complex and workshops. Courses at Pius XII College were taught and examined under a special relationship entered into in 1955 with the University of South Africa, which awarded students degrees and diplomas in Science, Commerce and Education.

Pius XII College experienced difficulties over finance for the expanding institution and over racial restrictions on the student residences as required by the University of South Africa. Negotiations with the High Commission Territories to transform the University College into a fully-fledged university were initiated during 1962.

From a total of 188 students in 1964, the University grew to 402 students in 1970, of whom 145 were from Lesotho, with lesser numbers from Swaziland, Botswana, Rhodesia, South Africa and elsewhere. UBLS conferred its first degrees in April 1967 after a transitional period during which the former Pius XII College students continued to take University of South Africa degrees.

Botswana The Chobe River has its origins in the highlands of Angola and once it enters Botswana, it goes through several name changes.
It enters as the Kwando River and immediately becomes the Linyanti, then the Itenge and is finally called the Chobe River.
Knowing this may avoid confusion when looking at maps or reading information.

Fishing on the Chobe River

The Chobe River area contains an interesting variety of habitats and is rich in plant life, with mopane woodland, mixed combretum, sandveld, floodplain, grasslands and riverine woodland. Many trees have suffered considerable damage from the high numbers of elephants, who push them over and rip off the bark - and some woods have been totally denuded.

The most popular area in and just outside Chobe National Park is the short 9-mile (15km) stretch of Chobe River from Kasane town to the Serondela campsite. Few people come to Chobe without taking a trip on this river to see hundreds of hippopotamuses and crocodiles. Both hippo's and elephants epitomise this park more than any other animals and are often featured on the cover of brochures to the area. The only subject more photographed in Chobe are the exquisite sanguine sunsets sinking slowly over the water.

Chobe National Park is probably the most affordable of Botswana's parks and with the lure of excellent game watching both on and beside the river, the well frequented areas can become quite crowded.

ANIMALS & BIRDS

Notwithstanding the elephants, Chobe has some of the finest game viewing in Africa. It is notable for huge herds of buffalo and zebras, lechwe, Chobe bushbuck and being the southernmost point where puku antelope can be seen. Where there are buffalo, lions are never far away and there is a good chance of seeing large prides who laze around in the shade all day and only yawn themselves awake at dusk. Hyena and leopard also hunt at night while cheetah are diurnal predators.
Chobe is rich in bird life with the Pel's Fishing own a favourite for bird watchers and the peculiar strangely beaked African skimmer another speciality.

HOW THE CHARTER ON HUMAN RIGHTS WAS BORN
Twenty years ago on 10 December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
To mark that event the U.N. General Assembly had unanimously designated the whole of 1968 as a year of International Human Rights.

In an issue of the Unesco Courier they reviewed the events which led to the final preparation of the Universal Declaration and examined some of the significant developments in the field of human rights during the past twenty years which had made it a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. Much had been accomplished since 1948, but no country in the world had yet fully implemented the rights affirmed in the Universal Declaration.

In an article by Professor René Cassin, the former president of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, who prepared the first draft of the Universal Declaration, he recalled how the historic document was drawn up and reaffirmed the profound significance of the Declaration.

The Botswana National Museum, also known as the National Museum and Art Gallery, is located in the capital Gaborone and is a multi-disciplinary institution that includes the National Art Gallery and Octagon Gallery. It displays traditional Botswana crafts and paintings and aims to celebrate the work of local artists.

The museum was established in 1967 via an Act of Parliament and it officially opened to the public in 1968. The museum celebrated a year-long 40th anniversary in 2008 under the banner of Museum as Agents of Social Change and Development, mirroring that used by the International Council of Museums.

The museum is also involved with the preservation of Tsodilo, the country's first world heritage area, among other efforts.
It is the caretaker of Tsholofelo Park, the burial place of the negro of Banyoles, known as El Negro in Botswana, following the body's return from the Darder Museum of Banyoles, in Spain.

Halley's Comet is arguably the most famous comet. It is a Periodic comet and returns to Earth's vicinity about every 75 years, making it possible for a human to see it twice in their lifetime. Seen twice in the 20th Centuary, in 1910 and 1986 - It is projected to return in 2061.

The comet is named after English astronomer Edmond Halley, who examined reports of a comet approaching Earth in 1531, 1607 and 1682.
He concluded that these three comets were actually the same comet returning over and over again, and predicted the comet would come again in 1758.

Halley didn't live to see the comet's return, but his discovery led to the comet being named after him.
Halley's calculations showed that at least some comets orbit the sun.
